Trigger Fraud Alert #23 (January 2025)

Police Impersonation Fraud

We have been informed by Humberside Police that fraudsters are purporting to be a Police Officer and contacting victims via telephone / landline. The fraudsters will introduce themselves via rank, i.e. (Detective Sergeant / Constable), give their full name and collar number. Fraudsters have claimed they are calling from MET / Surrey / Doncaster Police Stations, but fraudsters could use any Police Station.

The Fraudster impersonating a Police Officer will give an urgent reason why they are calling.

  • Arrest made on someone attempting to make a payment on a fraudulent card;
  • Suspicious activity identified on your bank account;
  • Asked to work on a covert police operation due to corrupt bank staff.

The fraudsters use different reasons, sound authentic and professional, they may know some of your personal details. The scam is to obtain further details from you so they can access any accounts you have online.

Message from Humberside Police:

If you receive a call like this hang up, the police will never ask you for your bank account details, pin number, ask you to transfer or withdraw money on their behalf or for evidence.

Take your time to consider what is being asked by you and if you have any concerns always hang up, ensure the other person has cleared, and use a different phone to call 101.
